I’m honored to be one of the champions for the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Future Business Leader Program, now in its 8th year. The Chamber partners with Redondo Union high school Economic teachers and SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) to offer college scholarships to teams of seniors who develop the best business plan for a fictional new business. Students learn to develop a mission statement, business description, legal structure, marketing and finance plans for their proposed businesses. They attend a luncheon sponsored by the Chamber that introduces how to write a winning business plan and hear from a panel of local business leaders who describe how they got their starts. The scholarship finalists prepare a “shark tank” presentation for the Chamber’s Economic Development Committee who choose the winners and honor them at the high school’s annual scholarship night. This is one of the most rewarding things that I do every year. We have helped nearly 50 students get their start as entrepreneurs, helping to build the next generation of innovation in the Golden State.
